Lake Victoria, Uganda - Joyce Achayo

Before moving to Canada in 1995, I lived in a camp for displaced persons in Kampala, Uganda. There was no clean water at the camp so the people living there would have to walk miles to collect water from Lake Victoria. I used to do this with my sister.

Being so young at the time, I thought walking those miles to and from the lake was a fun activity. My sister and I would get candy on the way, or sometimes mango. Later on, one of the water distribution companies built a well so that people wouldn't have to walk so many miles for freshwater. Looking back, I realize now that those walks with my sister were about survival.
