Salish Sea, BC - Madeleine Ankenman

The Salish Sea is the body of water I call home. As with many British Columbians living along these waters, almost every moment of recreation or vacation occurred along its shoreline. Rather than one place, I chose the entire sea because my childhood was marked by spending afternoons with friends at the beaches around Vancouver, vacations whale watching at my cabin facing the Straight of Georgia, and boating between the various Gulf Islands- exploring new passages and wildlife.

These experiences have allowed me to first-hand observe the decline in these waterways. E.coli warnings becoming earlier and earlier each summer. Pods of killer whales passing my cabin becoming less and less frequent. Wildlife encounters or favourite fishing spots becoming unobservable or less plentiful.

The sea provided me beautiful moments with my family and friends. It taught me wildlife identification. It taught me to distinguish an estuary from ocean. It gave me my path in life, and in return, I pledge to do whatever I can to return the sea to its glorious, natural state.
