Toronto Harbour, ON - Anna Prodanou

I live on Toronto Island on the street facing the city and the Toronto Harbour. I kayak and sail in the harbour and take the ferry daily to and from the city every day. I swim off Wards' Beach. When it rains I see the harbour cloud over with silt, sewage and debris that washes into the harbour waters from the Don River, It makes me very depressed.

From my deck, I can see the sailing schools from the Royal Canadian Yacht Club (RCYC) and the Queen City Yacht Club (QCYC) of which I am a member. The sailing dinghies full of small kids often capsize, which is part of the training in learning to sail. At those times, I hate the thought of the sewage in the harbour waters.

The New York Times included a trip to the Islands in their feature "36 Hours in Toronto". We have more and more international visitors to the islands every month. The state of harbour waters and the appearance of the Ferry Terminal puts Toronto to shame.
