Lake Manitouwabing, ON - Madison V

When I was young at the lake, I would sit on the dock with my feet just reaching the water, trying to see fish jumping. I remember seeing I had bunk beds in my room and feeling, so excited and happy. I remember my dad coming into the room that I shared with my sister to tell us that he was going fishing and that we could go with him. My sister and I would immediately race down to the dock to get into the boat. My dad cast my fishing line into a rocky area, telling me it was going to catch me a big fish. I was super excited and was expecting a big fish when I felt a tug on my line. I reeled it in, shocked to see a turtle.

When I was young at the lake, I remember seeing big rocks along the highway that were a sign that we were getting closer. The rocks were black, red, and brown and there would be trees, plants, and flowers growing from the rocks. If you were lucky, you would be able to see bears or moose standing watching the cars drive by. At night, during our bonfires, you could see the luminescent moon as fireworks filled the sky to signify the start of summer or Canada Day. The mosquitoes would bite my body repeatedly and the smell of bug spray perfumed the whole cottage the next day. The smell would eventually be replaced by the smell of eggs and bacon that were cooked for breakfast. After breakfast, I remember going swimming or going stand-up paddle boarding to start off the day in the water.

When I was young at the lake, I always felt a feeling of relaxation that would cleanse my body every time I was there. It was always great waking up to no school and breakfast made for me. There would always be pancakes or bacon and eggs for breakfast, with orange juice and fruit to go along with the meal. Once dinner time arrived, my dad and I would start a fire in the sauna so that it would be warm enough by the time we had eaten. After we sat in the sauna for a bit, we would jump into the water, giving a refreshing, healthy, and clean sensation. One time my sister and I did the polar plunge and I definitely felt clean and refreshed after that! During our campfires, we would sit and watch the stars, looking for the big dipper located just over the top of the fire pit. I will always remember how the stars would light up the sky with a gorgeous glowing effect.

At the lake, I remember, playing hide and seek with my cousins and always using the same hiding spots over and over to the point there would be no good spots left. When we were playing in the water, we would see who could hold their breath longer, swim the farthest, dive the best while cheating every time. We would go to the beach at our neighbour's and swim there for hours playing corn hole horseshoes and go on their water trampoline. During the winter, we would snow shoe and have snowball fights and drive to an outdoor rink to skate. There were rarely any people there, so we would have the whole place to ourselves. I will always remember the times when the lake was frozen, and we would skate on the ice instead.
