North Saskatchewan River, AB - Jan Terhart

My Watermark is the North Saskatchewan River, Alberta.

I've lived in Edmonton for about 30 years. The North Saskatchewan River is one of the city's greatest assets, but in my opinion, one of its least utilized. You'd probably be surprised to know there's at least 15 different kinds of fish in the waters. Lots of easy access to use at resource. It's also perfect for paddle boarding, canoeing, and kayaking. If this was the Bow (River) in Calgary, every weekend it would be full of people using canoes, paddle boards, and fishing rods to enjoy the river to its fullest. But it seems to be sort of a black sheep here in Edmonton. Anything that I can do that encourages people to get out and use that resource and learn more about it, I would do. It's kind of interesting to know that a river costs absolutely nothing to build. You couldn't afford to make one if you had to. We have one of the greatest one's in North America going right through our city, so appreciate it, use it, and enjoy

I remember one of the first times I got here fishing with this small little rod just to see what was in the river down below the shadow of John Ducey Park. I ended up hooked to an 80-pound sturgeon, which took me up the river, down the river. I finally had to break it off because I didn't have the right gear to get it in, but I was so surprised to find one of those almost prehistoric monsters at my feet. I've never really forgotten that. That was about 15 years ago now. They're protected, they're tagged, but most people would be surprised to know that those fish are swimming up and down underneath the bridges when they drive to work every day.
