North Saskatchewan River, AB - Laura Cunningham Shpeley

My Watermark is the North Saskatchewan River, Alberta.

In 2005, myself, my boyfriend at the time, and our friends took two canoes from Rocky Mountain House and canoed down to Drayton Valley. The great thing about that was a couple things. One, we hit a patch of rocky rapids and it freaked me out, but we kept going. And the rest of the float was incredible, we floated along the way.

We camped along the river and that was a really special experience because very few people, in my experience, will camp outside the boundaries of campgrounds and what is seen as safe. It wasn't your traditional 'safe' place to camp, but it's a way of seeing the province in a way that very few people get the chance to or take the time to. And we are really fortunate in Alberta to have this river that connects not only the country but also into the city.

On Monday I'll do a float with my kids and my husband down the North Saskatchewan, but in the city – I'd really like to see our city from the perspective of the river and a canoe. I'm excited. I love that we have a river and I love that it's such an integral part of our lives. We talk about it every time we cross the bridge over the river, it's pointed out.
