Northumberland Strait, NS - Donald Smith

My name is Donald Smith and I’m from Hamilton, Ontario.

I started in March 11, 1988 with McKeil, so I’ve been working for them for close to 27 and a half years. I am an engineer. I work all over, as part of the job. Last 4 or 5 years, I was up in the north country and down in New Brunswick; mostly on that one for the last 4 or 5 years. My most powerful of the water started in 1929 when my father was born in Wallace, Nova Scotia which is only about an inch and a half away from Pugwash, Nova Scotia. Pugwash has a great history with McKeil.

After the war in 1948, my dad moved his mother’s house from Wallace to Pugwash Junction to the Gulf Shore. Beside my grandmother’s house there was a park. When we were kids we called that park grandma’s park. She’s only about 800m off the beach. That was just one beautiful, beautiful place and it still is. That is my best water story – I love it. I’ve been there so many times, it’s just a place to get away to. Nothing happens there, nothing ever will, but it’s nice and quiet. It’s beautiful. Water is important because we need it. We have to have it, we have to make more of it, it’s not sustainable. We have to have it, and it’s given me an awful good living.

There’s just too many stories, some are good and some are bad. The worse I can think of are the floods. We’ve had our share of floods in the last 10 years and we never used to have them - all over the world, where water shouldn’t be. Our lakes are going down and the floodplains are getting worse. Somehow it’s got to be fixed.
