Bay of Fundy, NS - Amy Rawding

My Watermark is Bay of Fundy, Nova Scotia.

Ever since I was able to swim (or at least, try to swim), I would take any chance to be in the water. Growing up in Nova Scotia, we had close access to the Atlantic Ocean and went to the beach as much as possible in the summer. From the time we got there up until dusk, I would be swimming in the water. My family would make jokes about how I was “like a fish in water” when I was swimming. Nothing made me happier when I was younger than swimming in the Ocean did, especially on a sunny summer day.

My grandmother had a cottage at Black Rock, which was a cottage community on the shore of the Bay of Fundy, and in order to make me an honorary Nova Scotian, she made me swim with my head under water there, which is freezing if you haven’t been.

Overall, water is a large part of my life, as it is for everybody, and we need to protect it, whichever waterbody it may be. Living now in Ottawa, Ontario, the main waterbody I have is the Ottawa River. The Ottawa River is Ottawa’s main source for water – for drinking, washing, swimming, etc. – and should be valued as much as it deserves to be.
