Detroit River, USA - John Hartig

My Watermark is the Detroit River.

When I was growing up in the Watershed of the Detroit River, we used to come down and obviously it’s a big water. You could see freighters go by and there’s fishing. But there happened to be all kinds of oil all over the Detroit River, very visible pollution. The major tributary to the Detroit River was called the Rouge River and it caught on fire when I was in high school. So that impacted me a lot and I was impacted by earth day and I was interested in not only learning more about it but then hopefully being part of an effort to be a better steward of the watershed in these rivers.

That experience got me to go on to school to study in biology, in chemistry and then just make a career the clean up and restoration of the Great Lakes.
